FOCUSED WORK. WITHOUT THE COMMUTE.

Online coaching can be deeply productive.

A screen can still be a place for close listening, honest exploration, and meaningful progress. We work in short, purposeful steps—identify a challenge, try something specific, and bring the discovery back into your song or scene.

01 / MY ATTENTION IS ON YOU

More room to watch and listen.

When you sing with a prepared accompaniment track, I can focus on your sound, your breath, and your choices. We can pause, repeat a phrase, and explore what changes without splitting my attention between you and the piano.

02 / TRAIN WHERE YOU PRACTICE

Build a process you can repeat.

Make discoveries in the same space where you’ll practice tomorrow. Learn what to listen for and what to try, so a helpful moment in the lesson becomes something you can find again on your own.

03 / KEEP THE WORK MOVING

Make coaching fit your life.

Use the time you would spend traveling for focused work. Online sessions make it easier to keep developing your material around school, work, rehearsals, and the next audition.

TECHNIQUE THAT SERVES THE STORY

Your voice and your acting belong in the same conversation.

Voice & musical phrasing

Explore breath, registration, resonance, articulation, and freedom through your actual repertoire. Connect the exercise to the phrase, the lyric, and the sound you want to make.

Acting & interpretation

Clarify who you’re talking to, what you want, and what changes as you sing or speak. Turn analysis into specific choices you can test in the moment.

Auditions & self-tapes

Shape a cut that tells a complete story, work through the audition brief, and explore eyeline, focus, and how your choices read on camera.

Your goals set the direction. We can go deep on one challenge or connect several parts of the performance—you don’t need to diagnose the problem before we meet.

START HERE BEFORE YOUR SESSION

A little preparation.
More time for the work.

The right setup helps me hear your singing clearly and see your full performance. Our step-by-step guide covers Zoom audio, the two-device setup, camera placement, accompaniment, and what to bring.

How to Prepare for Zoom Coaching

You don’t need a recording studio.

  • A laptop or tablet for Zoom
  • A second device for your accompaniment tracks
  • A quiet space, a clear view, and a stable connection
  • Your material, your questions, and a willingness to explore

We’ll test a short passage together and adjust the sound balance at the start of your session.

FROM FIRST TRY TO NEXT STEP

What happens in an online session?

BEFORE / SET THE DIRECTION

Bring what matters to you.

Send new scores, scenes, or audition instructions ahead of time. Have your tracks ready in the correct key and cut. Bring a specific question and, when possible, a second song or scene.

DURING / EXPLORE THE CHANGE

Try it. Notice it. Try again.

We’ll work directly on your material, isolate the tricky part, and experiment with clear adjustments. Tell me what you notice so we can connect what you feel to what communicates.

AFTER / MAKE IT REPEATABLE

Take the work into your week.

Before we finish, we’ll clarify your main takeaways and what to practice next. Apply the discovery to a second piece so you’re building a transferable skill.

A practical note about accompaniment: internet delay makes singing along with piano from my end unreliable. You’ll usually play your track in your own room. Still learning notes or rhythm? Tell me ahead of time and we’ll plan how to work.

MEET YOUR COACH

Hi, I’m David Jayden Anthony.

I’m a voice and acting coach, musical theatre writer, and music director—and a musical theatre nerd. I make abstract ideas tangible, so you can build a process you can repeat on your own.

My master’s degree is in Musical Theatre Writing & Production from Berklee NYC. I’m an OCSA and Young Americans alumnus and former faculty member, and have worked as a pianist for Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Schwartz.

Online, we connect technique to your actual song or scene. The goal is to help you understand what works, why it works, and how to find it again.

A FEW PRACTICAL DETAILS

Online coaching questions

Can online voice and acting coaching really be productive?

Yes. We can work closely on vocal coordination, phrasing, text, intention, and audition choices through short demonstrations, focused repetitions, and immediate feedback. A clear sound setup and prepared material help us spend more of the session exploring your performance.

Can we work on both singing and acting in one session?

Absolutely. We can connect vocal technique to the character’s intention and the musical phrase, then apply the work directly to your song or scene. Your goals determine the balance.

Do I need expensive equipment?

You do not need a recording studio. Start with a laptop or tablet for Zoom, a second device for accompaniment tracks, a stable connection, and a quiet, well-lit space. Read the Zoom preparation guide for the full setup and audio checklist. Read the Zoom preparation guide →

Will you play piano while I sing over Zoom?

Internet delay makes singing along to piano from the coach’s end unreliable. For our usual online session, play your prepared accompaniment track in your own room. This also lets David concentrate on watching and listening to your performance. If you are still learning notes or rhythm, mention it in advance so we can plan the work.

What should I prepare for my first session?

Bring a song or scene, any audition instructions, your questions, and the correct accompaniment track if you are singing. Have a second piece ready when possible so you can try applying a discovery to different material. Follow the Zoom preparation guide before we meet. Read the Zoom preparation guide →

How much does online coaching cost?

A 60-minute online coaching session is $124 USD. Start with a free 30-minute Zoom coaching and assessment session, with no obligation to book paid sessions.

Can I combine online and in-person coaching?

Yes. Online sessions can keep your work moving between visits to the Long Beach studio. An in-person session can also give you a chance to practice working with live piano accompaniment before an audition. We can discuss the combination that fits your goals.
